Hello, I thought I'd start a new thread here on pregnancy. I've had a strange weekend, after bleeding a little on thursday and friday i had a scan this morning. i had convinced myself and my poor partner that i had miscarried. I just didn't feel pregnant at all and had probably read too much on the internet!

So this morning we went for the scan, we were both so nervous. Matt doesn't like hospitals and even though i am very used to visiting hospital i was a mess too.

Anyway, they found a heartbeat and said that everything is fine. They couldn't find any reason for the bleeding at all. They said baby measures 25mm and a have a little scan photo! I'm so relieved!

the relief when I first saw the scan was huge- that little peanut! bless her- she is 3 now and tall and chatty! Smile

Much love- plenty of rest etc.

thanks Jenni! it was a huge relief. I've been finding that im getting what i think is ligament stretching mostly on my left side like a dull ache or occasionly a stitch like pain when i turn over in bed. Also i have a sciatic (sp?) like pain in my left buttock area? It seems a bit early for things like this? would you think i'm more prone to it due to my RA? maybe its just one of those things, i'm just happy everything seems okay!

Thanks,

Sarah

Hi again- pain in buttock= hip pains.

It could be ligament movement, I fell over at 24wks pg and I was ever so frightened. the midwife explained it was ligaments changing. baby went round and round like mad for almost 24hrs solid! all that adrenaline straight in!

Does the outside of your hip feel warm compared to the rest of the leg?

gives your partner a chance to stroke your thigh anyway!RollEyes

hi everyone,

I had an appt with the midwife last fri. It was just a session to go through all the do's and don'ts. They also spoke about the scans and took blood tests. There was meant to be other ladies there but it was only me and my OH which he was glad about (antisocial git!) When she took my bloods she really struggled to find a vein so i ended up with a bruise on each arm! The good thing was that she asked whether i'd like her to take some for my RA tests so got it all done in one go!

So I have my booking in appt on 1st march and my scan date should come in for just after then.

I was wondering whether anyone knew how long it would take for hydroxychloroquine to get out of my system? I have an RA appt on 1/04/11 but would like to stop the hydroxy if i could do without it so I can breastfeed. When I explained to the midwife which meds i was on she just said "and your consultant thinks it's okay to continue with them?"

Obviously if i need them i'll stick with it but what if i could go without? how would I know?

hope you're all well,

sarah x

Hi Sarah

I was on Hydroxychloriquine when I discovered I was 5 weeks pregnant I stopped it immediately although Rheumy said It was safe to carry on I felt there was not enough research to say that it would not affect my baby. I was well throughout my pregnancy.
Although I have now flared up 2 months post natal and had to give up breastfeeding to go back on Hydroxy and not improving now been back on Hydroxy nearly 5 weeks...so back to clinic next week to be reviewed.

Best wishes

I was told it was fine to continue on Hydroxychloroquine throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding (I think it is even licensed because it is also used to treat malaria) - however it didn't agree with me. In the end (because I kept flaring) I took Sulphazalazine throughout my pregnancy. It is not licenced but apparently loads of women have taken it and there are no known side effects, as it is not licensed I was under an obstetritian but this was a bonus because I had loads of scans so got to see my baby lots before he was born. I also breastfed my son until he was 14 months whilst taking sulphasalazine (I asked my consultant and she did some research and said there was only 1 reported case of a baby developing a rash which went when they stopped breastfeeding, she said as long as I was aware of this there was no reason not to breastfeed).

My son is now 17 months old and very healthy and lively. Try not to worry too much - they are much more resiliant than we realise.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy
Becky

thanks for your message Becky.

Hi everyone, today i went for my booking in appt with the midwife. She had the results from my blood tests which were taken last time. The normal pregnancy ones were fine but the midwife last time took extra bloods to do my rheumatoid blood tests. My mcv came back raised slightly at 102. She said that this could be due to my liver, medication, alcoholism, b12 or folic acid. She took extra blood tests inc the ESR one. So i've obviously gone and looked on dr google, it seems that people on long term sulphasalazine can have trouble absorbing folic acid or have a deficiency.

I've been taking the normal 400 dose of folic acid since before i fell pregnant. I'm now worried that this may have not been absorbed at all. I've called the hospital and left them a message about it, the extra blood test should be back by the end of the week. I guess there could be some other reason for this being high but i'm really worried now. Surely if i was supposed to be taking a higher dose someone should have told me?

thanks for reading my rambling worries,

sarah x

things that spring to mind are 1) try not to scare yourself on google

2) its probably fine
3) I had to have extra folic acid than normal because of the threat of B12, liver reactions to previous drugs etc

have they ordered futher blood tests re liver etc?
There is a huge strain on your body when pregnant and healthy- when you have a chronic illness the strain is greater and all organs etc have to cope more.

Are you under a gynea and obs team at hospital? can you ring and ask for advice/ support?

Hi Jenni, Thanks for answering. They have taken more bloods. The midwife has now made a request for me to see an obs consultant as well. I spoke with a registrar in my rheumatology dept just then. She had a good look at my blood test results and said that my folic acid levels were very good, my b vitamins were fine. She said it's just one of those things and it could just be down to the sulphasalazine or even just the pregnancy itself. She did ask whether i'd had a heavy night of drinking the night before!! So they've put my mind at rest.

Yes your right about google, my midwife has already told my off about that!

It is really confusing all the different informaton about medications...when I was given a kenelog steriod injection I was told to stop breastfeeding for 3 days I don't think they understood that is easier said than done!
luckily I had been already suplementing harry with formula so he was used to a bottle and I had formula in the house.
Although I did ring an NHS helpline that was specifally about Beastfeeding and medication and they were really helpful I spoke to a pharmacist directly that specialised in this. I have the number if you are interested.

hello everyone, sorry i haven't updated in ages. i was 15 weeks yesterday and i'm doing fine. i had my 12 week scan a little while ago, they put me forward 6 days which is technically impossible but i'm letting that go!

The scan was fine, after being woken up the baby was somersaulting around which was weird as i couldn't feel a thing! I had the results back from the nuchal test which came back low at 1:15000, the letter that came with it was the most confusing ever but the end result was good.

I'm now kind of in an imbetweeny stage, i'm feeling well and it's been a few weeks since the scan, i can't feel any movement yet so i'm looking foward to my next midwife appt where she'll let me listen to the heartbeat. thanks for reading, sarah x
